Abstrak

Asam folat memegang peran penting bagi kesehatan ibu dan bayi, khususnya dalam pertumbuhan dan perkembangan janin. Berdasarkan beberapa penelitian sebelumnya, ditemukan bahwa defisiensi ataupun kelebihan asam folat prenatal dapat meningkatkan risiko autism spectrum disease (ASD) pada bayi. Hal ini menimbulkan kekhawatiran tentang efek merugikan dari suplemen asam folat prenatal termasuk peningkatan risisko ASD. Oleh karena itu, artikel literature review ini dibuat untuk mengeksplorasi lebih lanjut mengenai implikasi atau keterlibatan suplementasi asam folat ibu terhadap risiko ASD pada keturunannya. Basis data elektronik Google Scholar, Pubmed, dan Connected Papers digunakan untuk menemukan literatur yang memenuhi kriteria. Hasil tinjauan didapatkan adanya potensi efek menguntungkan dari suplemen asam folat prenatal pada risiko timbulnya ASD, meskipun hasil yang berlawanan telah dilaporkan juga. Singkatnya, artikel literature review ini menunjukkan bahwa suplemen asam folat prenatal dapat secara signifikan mengurangi risiko ASD pada keturunannya dibandingkan dengan wanita tanpa suplemen asam folat prenatal.
