The Relationship Between Family Support and Treatment Adherence in Tuberculosis Patients: A Systematic Review.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a serious global health threat. The success of therapy depends heavily on patient adherence to long-term treatment. In this context, family support plays a crucial role. Families not only provide emotional support but also ensure adherence to routine treatment and provide support to ensure patients complete their treatment. This systematic review was conducted to identify commonly used research instruments to measure the relationship between family support and treatment adherence. A literature search was conducted using ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Scopus data from December 2025 to February 2026, using the keywords "tuberculosis," "family support," and "treatment adherence." The study selection process was conducted using the Rayyan application and based on a standard PRISMA diagram. The search identified eleven studies using a cross-sectional design. Nine of these studies found a positive association between strong family support and patient adherence, while two studies indicated that a lack of family support was a contributing factor to patient non-adherence to treatment. The use of various instruments in this study, such as the MSPSS, MMAS, MARS, WHOQOL-BREF, PHQ-9, and EQ-5D-5L, reflects a high degree of heterogeneity in the measurement approaches used. Therefore, although this argument confirms a relationship between family support and improved adherence to treatment, the strength of the existing evidence remains limited due to variations in study designs and instruments used. To improve conclusions and comparability between future studies, longitudinal or intervention-based studies using more standardized and consistent measurement instruments are needed.
