Abstract

COVID-19 pneumonia is one of the complications in COVID-19 patients with a high mortality rate. Patients with COVID-19 pneumonia require intensive care if respiratory failure occurs or oxygen saturation (SpO2) is below 93%. Antibiotics are one treatment modality, and their evaluation is needed to support rational use. This study examined the appropriateness of antibiotics given to patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in the intensive care unit of Bhayangkara H.S. Samsoeri Mertojoso Hospital, Surabaya, including the route of administration, type, dose, frequency, duration, and therapeutic outcome. This retrospective study used medical records of patients treated from January to July 2021. Fifty-eight patients met the inclusion criteria. Levofloxacin, meropenem, and cefoperazone-sulbactam were the most commonly administered antibiotics, accounting for 33%, 24%, and 19%, respectively. All antibiotics were administered intravenously by the correct route. Eight antibiotics were appropriate in type and dose; two were not appropriate in frequency. In general, treatment duration followed the guidelines. More patients died during treatment than recovered. The study concluded that antibiotics were given with the appropriate type, route, dose, and timing, and called for continued efforts by hospital health workers to support rational antibiotic use.
