Abstract

Background: Diabetes is a chronic disease caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin, and leads to elevated blood glucose. Diabetes carries the risk of complications and is life-threatening if not properly managed. Diabetes is one of the top ten causes of death worldwide. Diabetics have a 25% risk of developing complications due to diabetic foot infections caused by bacteria. Foot infections in diabetics can be fatal. Objective: To determine the profile of antibiotic use and spore map in diabetic gangrene patients at Adam Malik Hospital. Method: This study is a type of quasi-experimental research with a Pretest Posttest Nonequivalent Control Group, in which this design, the experimental group and the control group are not randomly selected; namely, this design is carried out before and after treatment. Results: In this study, culture tests were performed on 54 patients (44%), with positive results in 34 patients and negative results in 20 patients. The most common bacteria was Enterobacter cloacae at 24%, which is a gram-negative bacteria, followed by Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Citrobacter youngae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteusphylocferi vulgai. Proteus mirabilis were 18%, 15%, 9%, 6%, 6%, 6%, 6%, 3% and 3% respectively. Conclusion: The results showed that metronidazole infusion was the most widely used antibiotic quantitatively, namely. 286.03 DDD/100 treatments per patient day.
