Abstract

Background: Green lady finger contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids that have antibacterial properties. Fish bones contain 60-70%minerals with hydroxyapatite, carbonated apatite or dalhite. Fish bones provide calcium (Ca) and are abrasive in the toothpaste dosage form. Purpose: This study aimed to make toothpaste dosage forms containing ethanolic extracts of green lady finger (Abelmoschus esculentus) and tuna fish bones (Thunnus albacares) to test antibacterials against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: This study technique was implemented experimentally, including the formulation of the toothpaste dosage form with concentrations of ethanol extract of green lady finger fruit 20%, 15%, 10%, positive control and negative control physical quality inspection including organoleptic examination, foaming power, extrudability, homogeneity, pH and viscosity as well as testing antibacterial activity exhibited by Streptococcus mutans. Results: The results demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of green lady finger and tuna fish bones could form into a toothpaste dosage form with a homogenous composition and a pH that was suitable for oral use (7,8-8,4), stable in storage, had a viscosity value of 315-485, very easy to remove in the tube, spreadability (6,4-6,7 cm), produces foam height between (7,4-7,7 cm) and has antibacterial activity by Streptococcus mutans. Conclusion: This study concludes that the ethanolic extract of green lady finger and tuna fish bones has antibacterial action against Streptococcus mutans and can be made into toothpaste.
