Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in blood sugar due to a decreasing in insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells and/or impaired insulin function (insulin resistance). Based on the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) (2015), Indonesia was ranked 7th in the world with 10 million people suffered from DM. DM can become serious and cause a chronic condition that is dangerous if not treated and not adhered in taking medication. The main risks associated with DM are hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, dehydration, and thrombosis. The incidence of hypoglycemia can be influenced by age factors, duration of suffering from diabetes, weight, and glycemic control. Acute and chronic complications of hypoglycemia can interfere with life, such as social interaction, sleep, sexual activity, driving, sports, and other activities.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hypoglycemia in type 2 DM patients on therapy adherence and quality of life. The design of this study was a cross-sectional study with subjects of the research were adult patients with type 2 DM who used oral anti-diabetes medication for more than 6 months. Patients who have a history of hypoglycemia are divided into 3 groups, namely (1) Having hypoglycemia in the last 3 months; (2) Not experiencing hypoglycemia in the last 3 months; (3) Never experience hypoglycemia.

Measurement of adherence using the Morisky Modified Adherence Scale (MMAS), measurement of quality of life with Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire (DQoL), data obtained will be processed statistically using Chi-Square Test. The result of this study was unable to prove the relationship of hypoglycemia to therapy adherence (p = 0.756; p> 0.05) and the quality of life of patients (p = 0.143; p> 0.05).
