Abstract

Escherichia coli infection can be treated with antibiotics. However, antibiotic resistance can occur if its use is inappropriate for adopting alternative therapies, including developing therapy with the potential of medication based on plants. Sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) and kemangi (Ocimum sanctum) leaves are two substitutes that can be utilized in medicine as antibacterial agents. This research was conducted to analyze the comparison of inhibition of kemangi (Ocimum sanctum) leaves, sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) leaves, and a combination of both against the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria in vitro. Test for inhibition activity used a paper disc diffusion method. The results showed that the extract of kemangi (Ocimum sanctum) leaves and sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) leaves obtained the highest inhibition zone occurring at concentrations of 100%. In the combination test of the two extracts, a concentration of 50%:50% gave the most optimum inhibition zone with an average diameter of 33,1 mm. The one-way ANOVA statistical (p=0.001) results showed a significant difference in the diameters of the inhibition zone of each treatment group on the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria.
